Doing Dessert

Do eat dessert! Dessert is a celebration of good food and a good life.

My grandmother always said, "Be sure to leave room for dessert." Because of this, I learned not to eat until I was stuffed. Saving room for dessert is a lifelong habit, with surprise benefits! Having an eye on dessert makes portion control of the entree sensible. Do eat dessert with a spirit of appreciation. Enjoying dessert sets a tone of appreciation that echoes in every relationship.

I never realized 'desserts' is 'stressed' spelled backwards.
Here's how to enjoy dessert without stress.
  • D --  Do the right thing. Eat with self-respect.
  • E --  Enjoy every mouthful. Use your tongue to satisfy the drive for flavor.
  • S --  Smile more when you are having dessert. Celebrate! Feel the goodness.
  • S --  Stop between each mouthful. Put down your fork or spoon and savor the sweetness.
  • E --  Engage in eye contact while you're enjoying the sweet. Enjoy sensual syncing.
  • R --  Remember, it's fortunate to have dessert when there is so much hunger in the world
  • T -- Take your time. You may discover that you don't need to finish dessert. Dessert is a treat!

Falling Off The Wagon

Falling off the wagon hurts. Any kind of fall hurts. The first response we need is comfort, not anger. Start with kindness.

"People don't come pre-assembled, but are glued together by life." ~ Joseph Le Doux

Life is full of surprises and curve balls. Everyone falls off the wagon. It's not about losing control; falling off the wagon is hitting a bump in the road. There are no smooth rides in anyone's life. A helpful way to handle bumps in the road is to have a plan.

 Here are some options:

  • If you have a friend who also is working on her weight management, arrange a code word like: "PANIC" and the next time you hit a bump, call her. Together, the two of you practice breathing to connect with personal dignity and physical purpose, for 5 slow breaths in and 5 slow breaths out. Then, tell each other how you're feeling. Talking with a caring friend is more satisfying than the loneliness of binging.
  • If you're alone, leave the room and leave the issue inside. If possible, go outside and notice the amazing signs of life around you - plants, animals, people, sunlight, the wind.  Breathe slowly in and out 5 times to connect with your inner dignity and courage. Yes, it takes courage to fight against what hurts. Decide a way you feel comfortable dealing with the problem, and then respect your choice. The main point is not to hurt yourself.
  • If someone close to you is creating stress that pushes you to hide by eating, you need to find a new hiding place. There are always options. Eating a gallon of ice cream while hiding in your room or your car may seem like a solution, but you already know it's self defeating, and the only person being punished is you. Life is not fair but you can still be fair with yourself. Stay real. One day at a time is all you can ask of yourself.
It doesn't matter why or how we fall off the wagon. It matters that we face the truth, forgive ourselves with kindness, reflect on why this happened, and hop back on with renewed dignity and fresh determination to reach our destination physique. The only time we fail is when we give up. Starting fresh is personal power.

Stay in touch with momentum in your life.Take a tip from nature. No matter how dark the night is, day arrives. After winter, comes spring. The weather will be horrible one day and nice 24 hours later. Allow yourself to experience your truth and then remember that you have dignity, courage and determination. Ultimately, if you don't know what to do when you hit a bump in the road, start with being kind to yourself. The rest is easy.

Am I Really Hungry? 6th Sense Diet : Intuitive Eating can help you recognize underlying emotional bumps in the road and steer around them. Life is created by our choices and our habits. Our responsibility is to ourselves. No one makes us do anything. Take control of challenges by knowing yourself better. Be honest with yourself and the road will get smoother. Guaranteed!

Use Spring Fever to Lose Weight

Spring is a time of enthusiasm and a time of new beginnings.
You feel Spring fever in your body. Use that feeling to change the way you eat.

Begin to taste every meal,  savor every bite in your mouth,  share the enjoyment of it with others and stay connected with your body. Get sensual and lose weight with enjoyment, instead of diet-stress. De-stress means:

Don't Eat Simply To React. Eat Sensually and Slower.

Do Eat to Satisfy, Taste, Relax, get Energy and Satisfy yourSelf.

Stress is in your head. Digestion is in your body. When you're stressed it inhibits your body's abilities to get the most nourishment from what you eat. Stress impacts your ability to think clearly and it can release a hormone into your body telling it to hold on to fat!

De-stress and eat less. Forget diet dogma and tune into your body and your personal priorities. You know what feels good.  If you want to lose weight, make a commitment to yourself to trust your body and be honest with yourself about what matters, before putting something into your mouth.

Feel Spring. Let the enthusiasm of new beginnings free you from old regrets and old self-defeating habits. Today is your day to begin the rest of your life. Do it with dignity and self-respect.

Use intuitive tools to get liberated from extra weight and old patterns that are so 'last year'.

See yourself in summer clothes looking happy, healthy and feeling fit. Feed that person! She's as real as you allow her to be. Go for it, it's Spring!

Nature is forgiving, it begins anew each year. Forgive yourself for bad decisions and shed them with your weight by eating intuitively. Spring fever is a time to feel light with joy!

Start now by smiling. There's a billboard in Texas that says: "If you see a man without a smile, give him yours."  Do it and spread the fever.

Be Curious.

It's time. Learn to think with your senses.

If you're ready to get off the diet treadmill and stop fighting with your weight -
Make 2 resolutions to get results you've been dreaming about.
Start easy.
1.  Taste every bite of food you put in your mouth. This is you reconnecting with your body.
2.  Be curious. This is you reconnecting with your intuition.

  • Everyone has intuition.
  • Curiosity is intuitive. It's part of your survival instinct.
  • You don't think, curious; you feel curious. It's a physical intuitive nudge.
  • The more curious you are, the more aware you are, and so the more you discriminate, the better choices you make.
  • Be curious and respond to what you sense.

2012 is your year to feel and look great. It's easy.
In 2011, 95% of dieters gained back their weight. 2012 is the time to think differently.
OLD diet methods are generic and create stress.
NEW is custom-tailored to you and effortless.
It's natural to base what you eat on cues from your senses that tell when you're hungry and when you're not.
Intuition works with your brain and your body as a focusing, balancing and awareness lens. This creates a relaxed way of being in sync with yourself that's easy & relaxing.

Cheat?!!

I heard about a diet that encourages you to 'cheat' to lose weight!?!?  BAD IDEA. Everyone knows cheating makes you feel bad about yourself.  Only someone truly out of touch with her intuition would see cheating as a solution. It's the opposite of trusting yourself!
C stands for confused.
H stands for hurting yourself.
E stands for everyone.
A stands for angry.
T stands for trouble.

When you ignore your intuition, you are out of sync with yourself and feel stressed. Cheating causes stress.  When you're stressed you get angry easily and everyone around you knows it. Cheat when you eat spells long term trouble. Don't be confused by the promise of a 'quick fix'. There is no such thing. 95% of people who diet gain back more weight than they lose! Cheat and you cheat yourself. Ouch.

Eating intuitively keeps you clear about your meal choices and helps you achieve and maintain a healthy body. When you're in sync with your intuition, you feel like you have more energy because you're in tune with your body and your values. You create your future when you feel clear about who you are and what matters.

C stands for clarity.
R stands for remember values.
E stands for everyone.
A stands for automatic
T stands for total body mind heart in sync.
E stands for evolution.

Trusting your body and using intuition is staying aware of who you are and what makes sense for your needs physically, emotionally and socially. Intuitive eating creates clarity that feels like balance or well-being. Balance diffuses stress and keeps long term priorities in view. Intuitive eating is creating what makes sense for your happiness and long term quality of life.

Don't buy into media hype and lies. You know what makes sense. That's why you're reading this.  Be good to yourself. Treat yourself with dignity and respect your body. Use your intuitive tools to keep clear about eating choices. It becomes automatic. You won't be stressed, and everyone will know it.

Pick up or download a copy of Am I Really Hungry? to see easy ways to protect yourself from cheating or being cheated when it comes to what matters in your life! An attitude of dignity will help you help yourself. Life is too good to cheat yourself - ever!

Trade Stress for Satisfaction

I am so excited to share what changed my life from feeling trapped to knowing that I'm in control of my choices. It was connecting with my intuition, and you can do it too!

Learning how to recognize intuitive cues from my body helped me trade stress for satisfaction.  Am I Really Hungry will guide you out of the traps of dieting to the life changing satisfaction of self-control.

There are 3 requirements: stop "dieting", tune-in to your body and start trusting your 6th sense.

Intuitive eating frees your mind from trying to control your body. It does this because it's something you sense (like seeing or hearing) not something you think about. That why intuition works by giving you physical cues. Eating is all about our physical being.

Because dieting imposes limits and rules on your body, it creates physical and emotional stress that ultimately you intuitively rebel against, which is why diets ultimately fail. Craving and binging are often a direct result of dieting.

It's much easier to work with your body by responding to it then to work against it by ignoring it.

Hunger is personal.  You have mental, emotional and intuitive needs to nourish along with your physical needs. All of this creates cravings. Until you recognize what you're really hungry for these are easy to confuse.

Intuitive eating is common sense. It includes checking in with your body, mind and emotions and doing exactly what feels right. Learn to connect with your body to keep weight off by recognizing intuitive cues and you won't be manipulated by unhealthy cravings.

Instead of stress you connect with self-control at mealtime and the big reward  is: you like your body and you like yourself! You can feel the relief.

Start now by using the 3minutes rule to get through confusing food cravings to connect with what you really want. It's called "Doing the Intuitive Pause".

            1. Stop yourself from being mentally manipulated.
Ignore the craving by focusing on being kind and patient with yourself for 3 minutes. Tune in to your body's needs and your state of mind. It's intuitive to respect your body by remembering your physical priorities.

            2. Notice your attitude towards yourself.
Don't compromise who you are because you're angry, frustrated, lonely, stressed or bored. Instead, find something besides food to make you feel better.

            3. Use all of your senses to notice what's triggering your appetite.
This includes using common sense to notice what's impacting you outside of your body. Common sense is the intuitive way of being alert.

            4. Decide how you will feel about yourself if you eat what you're craving.
If you won't be happy with yourself an hour later, it's not physical hunger.

            5. If you recognize the food craving is from your body, then enjoy eating it by noticing how satisfied your body feels while you're eating. It's intuitive to enjoy eating. In fact, you get 70% more nutrition from food when you enjoy it!

I look forward to seeing you there!

It's too hot for stress and guilt!

Wow- Summer is half-over but the heat won't let up and there are still weeks ahead of wearing clothes that reveal every unwelcome bulge. The surprise is- only you see flaws. Other people see pleasing curves. We are all our own worse critics.

Did you know that being hard on yourself can make you fat?! That's right, stress and guilt sabotage weight loss. Our bodies are primitive. Energies like stress and guilt feel threatening. When your body's threatened, it holds on to fat.

To be your ideal weight: work with your body, don’t fight it or ignore it.
People who diet have the habit of ignoring their bodies.
So, why not connect with your intuition and get some relief?

Eating based on a book or a program is stressful because it's not about you, your body or your life realities. Rushing to lose weight, forcing yourself to follow a program, or starving yourself all create stress. It's really too hot in August to bring on more heat from stress.

Eating intuitively puts you in sync with your body. You feel comfortable with yourself. It's refreshing. Why not cool off with intuitive eating?

Becoming an intuitive eater is natural; it doesn't create stress.
Everyone can do it because using intuition is being plugged into yourself. Your appetite is personal, just like your fingerprints or DNA.

Eating is as easy as breathing and as important for your health and energy level. If you tried to restrict your breathing the way you control your eating, what would happen?

Diets create stress. Intuitive eating is long term satisfaction.
August is too hot for stress.

People who don't diet and stay a healthy weight are intuitive eaters that have tools to stay in sync with their body goals. These tools demolish hot buttons like stress and guilt that sabotage weight loss.

Nourishing your self is done with food, ideas and emotions. It's all connected inside you. Your senses work with your mind and your body to let you be clear about what is nourishing.

Use your intuition and get rid of dieting for good.

Diet or Eat Intuitively?

Are you ready to let go of the stress of having to think about every thing you eat in terms of calories, portion control or programs?
Are you ready to eat for energy and good health?
If you answered 'yes' to the above questions, you're ready to eat intuitively.
Classic dieting doesn't work. It's a fact that 95% of dieters re-gain their weight. Diets create stress that rolls into all aspects of your life.

Dieting:
  • causes emotional dependency on program structure.
  •  creates dependency on calorie counting.
  • makes you doubt yourself which sabotages self-esteem.
  • claims to know more about your body than you do.
  • sabotages your relationships by creating stress at mealtime.
Intuitive eaters maintain their healthy weight. Eating intuitively is liberating.
Intuitive eating:
  •  is a focus on your how your body feels, what you value, and your personal goals.
  • means you're the expert.
  • brings an open relationship with food and eating that is flexible.
  • has no emotional component so you enjoy eating.
  • can bring new life to your relationships.
When you make the choice to be an intuitive eater, you begin. Yep, it's that easy.
Doing what you really believe takes courage. Making the choice is like turning a corner. The fact is: eating intuitively is a choice.

Intuition helps control of your eating because it keeps you clear about your priorities and your boundaries. That protects you.

Using intuition means, emotions don't rule, you do! When clarity is the foundation of your efforts to be your healthy weight, it happens.

Everything you do takes effort, and every effort you make creates results. Be clear about your eating goals, and you will achieve them.  Make the choice.

“Life is the sum of all your choices.” Albert Camus

How to be an intuitive eater is made clear when you read Am I Really Hungry? The website has answers and the book tells you exactly how to take control of your choices, intuitively.

Your Body is Talking!

Your body is talking to you. Are you listening?
Your body tells you when you're hungry and lets you know when you're not. Body language is a kind of a nudge or an ache. When you're needing to eat it's a push and when you've overeaten it feels like a kick in the gut. When you're not really hungry and you're around food, your body will communicate by feeling shut down. Learning to recognize body language guides you to eat when you're hungry and stop when you're not. Listening to your body will have it and you feeling satisfied and energized!  Here are ways to stay connected with your body when you eat:
First: Be Tolerant of your whole self, body and mind, by acknowledging that you are trying hard to eat smart for your body. Part of being tolerant is forgiving the past and staying in the present.
Hey- the present is the only thing that exists right now!
When you're down on yourself you stress your body which releases hormones that make it hold onto fat!
Listening to your body and being kind to your body  lets it relax and let go of fat!
This is a guarantee- try it! Let me know how it goes- and I'll post your results.
Posts will get a FREE consult with me about how to intuitively connect with your body to lose weight.
Second: Use your senses: see, smell, taste, touch, hear around food. Over eating happens when you don’t notice you're putting food into your body. Body language is loud when you tune-in.
Let your intuition work for you.
Intuition keeps your priorities clear. It frees your mind from trying to control your body so you enjoy eating!
Don’t wait until your body screams at you with gas or bloat pain.  Don’t wait until your body is embarrassing when you put on your bathing suit  or when you’re ready to make love.
Listen to your body.
Be proud of your body by respecting yourself - body, mind and heart. This is how to be kind to yourself.  Eat smart by respecting your self.  Your body will be purring, and you will be happy.

The Eating Challenge, Take 2

Intuitive eating is knowing that what you need for energy and health is what you want to eat. It takes courage to maintain your intuitive connection through challenging eating situations.

You may need to eat bread with your meal, or protein, or you may just feel like having yogurt. You may decide that you had such a big lunch that you will just have an appetizer for dinner. Sounds simple, but it takes courage. Courage is when you recognize what you know, and you respect who you are. Courage is following through with what you know and doing what you respect.

Words make it sound easy, sure. Doing what sounds easy just may surprise you. The real eating challenge is to trust yourself to be good to yourself.

Challenging eating situations happen every day. We feel tempted or starved, or like there is no choice, or like pleasing others. The challenge to be true to physical needs, while feeling pressure from stress or from exhaustion is often the result of not trusting what you intuitively know your body needs.

Take the eating challenge and observe yourself around food. Use your eyes, your ears, taste, touch and smell. Notice messages from your stomach and notice how you feel in your heart and your head. Fine tune your senses. Listen to your intuition, and recognize habits that end up making you feel badly about your self. When it is time to eat, use your senses to smell, taste and see what you are eating and think about how your body feels and what you want for your self. Give your self a chance.

Intuition is a kind of natural courage. Connect with your intuition, and eat only what you know and feel is right. When you tune into your body, and your hunger with courage, you start to recognize your eating needs. Then you trust your self and take control of feeding your hunger. This is not easy because it's probably not something that you thought about before. So, give yourself a chance to think. Take a deep breathe in and now breathe out really, really slowly until there is nothing inside. Good.
It takes courage to recognize and trust your self.
It takes courage to stand up for your self.
It takes courage do what is right.
It takes courage to acknowledge what you need.

It takes courage to recognize habits, but if you don’t, you will never be happy with your weight. Ignoring your senses, your body, and what you know, creates a vicious cycle when you eat, and all it takes to stop, is connecting with the courage to follow your truth.  Ah yes, that is the eating challenge.

Guilt and Stress

Guilt around eating is motivated by a short term perspective and it creates unhealthy stress that leads to binging.

Guilt around eating is not part of intuitive eating. Guilt is a short-sighted 5 letter word. Binging is a self-destructive temper tantrum. Anything that motivates you to abuse yourself is not intuitive.

A habit of dieting is to think about eating foods as "good" or "bad". This creates guilt and stress. Try to let go of that. Instead, think of eating intuitively, as satisfying or comforting. Use your senses, including common sense and eat to feel good. Intuitive eaters eat what they want. When they slip, intuitive eaters get back on track because they are motivated to look and feel good.

It is natural to learn from eating experiences. There is no magic mirror of approval when it comes to your body. Measuring progress at every meal creates emotional stress and misses the bigger picture. What you eat is the foundation for the rest of your life. Every meal is a step along your path. Nobody walks a straight path because stuff happens.

Intuitive eating is a long-term perspective because your body is constantly changing. It's intuitive to see the bigger picture instead of judging every meal. Eating is about nourishment. Life is a do-it-yourself project. You can adjust, correct, and not-repeat choices. You are in control. Your body will be the result of choices you make today. Decide to eat what looks and feels good.

This is a new year and a time of new beginnings. Respecting yourself is a combination of trust and honor. Now is a perfect time to respect your self. Really trust your heart, body, mind, and six senses to protect you and let that self-respect honor and guide your eating choices.

Change your body?

“We cannot change anything unless we accept it.” Carl Jung

Last night I had dinner with a woman who told me that she had tried to love her body, but she could not. She had been told to love her body to lose weight, and this put a lot of pressure on her. Ouch. Fortunately, she doesn’t have to love her body to lose weight, but she does have to stop fighting with it. The first step toward change is acceptance. Acceptance means you will work with your body to achieve your weight goals. When you accept your body, you trust your self. It is not automatically easy, and it takes courage.

The result of not trusting your self is, you lose self-respect. Then, you feel cowardly. Then, you get mad at your self, and act in a self-destructive way. You may eat mechanically, out of anger, frustration, or boredom. Then, eating is not about physical hunger or appetite, it’s not a response to your senses, it’s a self-destructive habit. Self destructive behavior is an example of fighting with your body.

Does this mean you have to love your body no matter what you see in the mirror? Absolutely not. When you use your eyes and look at your body in the mirror and it looks out of shape, it doesn’t feel good. When you accept your body, then you are free to choose to do what feels right to change it. Instead of fighting with your self by condemning your body, you can decide to work with your self, to pay attention to how your body feels, what messages you are getting from your six senses, and what you know, to achieve a healthier body.

When you don’t accept your self, you are creating stress inside. When you don’t like your body, you are condemning yourself. You are creating hostility inside that will bug you and press your buttons every time you look in the mirror. The result is- you will unintentionally, punish your self by self-destructive eating.

Change won't happen over night or even in a week.  What will change overnight is your attitude.  Once you stop fighting with your body, you won't look at food the same way. Instead of resenting your body, you will work with it, doing what you know and feel is good.  In fact you will be using your intuition, and your body will respond.  That's a guarantee.

When things are not ideal, it is not easy to face them. But it’s a fact that not dealing with reality will not change it! Instead it’s helpful to realize that the present is the foundation for the future, and that accepting what is real means you can change it.

for practical advice, and you will change your body!

Lose weight without suffering with The Intuitive Diet.

Release stress around eating choices by using your intuition.

Americans have been struggling with diets and exercise to maintain a fashionable weight for over 50 years. It’s no secret that it’s not really working. With classic 20th century dieting, our emotions drive us. Often for dieters there is guilt, self-loathing, and stress around eating. 20th century dieting usually means suffering, restrictions and most likely only a temporary fix. Images in the media often distort our self-image, and this, too, hits us emotionally. The good news is: intuitive eating lets you end this cycle of emotion driven self-abuse that is often experienced as over-eating, or self-induced starving. Instead of trying to control your eating, The Intuitive Diet works with your body.

Diets are by definition, restrictive. Feeling restricted creates stress. Stress can create weight gain and prevent weight loss. Intuitive eating works physically, emotionally, and intellectually to create your natural weight because the focus is on feeling healthy, not restrictions or weight loss. It’s the weight to go. Instead of stress, you feel satisfied. As a result of using your intuitive tools, you will recognize what works and doesn’t work for you. You will discover your common sense, and in the process, you will achieve the weight that makes sense for your body and your lifestyle.

By fine tuning your senses, you will learn to recognize eating choices that feel good the next day . It’s as easy as deciding you’re ready to do it. “It takes as much stress to be a success as it does to be a failure.” Emilo James Trujillo

It’s time to change your relationship with food and eating. When you are driven to have a certain “look”, you push your self to eat or diet at a pace that ignores what you see, hear, taste, touch and smell. The result is you feel stressed and have dulled your senses. When the senses are ignored we make the wrong connections! You see a plate of brownies and eat on auto-pilot, or you sit in front of the TV and eat an entire bag of chips! Are you comforting your self or are you being hostile to your body? As you connect with your senses you will start to notice connections with your body.

Intuitive eating connects you with values that define a quality of life every one needs. It is understanding the way balanced eating feels and knowing when you’re satisfied. It puts you in touch with your body so that you really are in control of your eating. And there is no suffering.

Intuitive eating is being in control of your self, what you eat, and how it happens. As you connect with the satisfaction of intuitive eating, you will feel good. Your relationship with food will change. You will feel good about your self. People who are ‘naturally’ slim have two powerful traits. First, they trust their intuition about what to eat. Second, they have core tools that keep them on track, which are always accessible. In fact, we can all do this. Everyone can connect with their intuitive tools, and learn to use and depend on them. With practice, it gets easy.

What is intuition?
Intuition is your 6th sense. It is your internal guidance system. Intuition is like your sense of hearing, a passive way of receiving. It is like your eyes and can be focused. It is like taste and smell, because you can savor and develop it. And intuition is like touch because it can comfort, or shock you. In fact, your intuition is how your five basic senses interact. You can always access your intuition. Pleasure and protection are the supreme gifts of our senses. When our senses are finely tuned, so are we!

How do I do it?
Begin to eat intuitively by simply renewing appreciation of your five basic senses- taste, touch, smell, sight, and sound. You will discover it is refreshing. Doing this will make a drinking a cup of coffee, eating a fresh peach, or walking through the supermarket, a brand new experience. This is the attitude of embracing your intuition. Start today. It is said that those who gain experience while retaining a beginner’s state of mind become long-term survivors. The benefit of intuitive eating is a long-term reality.

You will start to release your stress when you pay attention to your senses.
As you do this you’ll notice your own energy flow. That’s because our senses are how we receive and share energy. Listen carefully, and you will discover that you have insights about your hunger and your appetites. Use your eyes and you will recognize things that you thought you missed and you will feel literally, more awake. Energy is a subtle as breathing or as obvious as running a mile. Peace of mind, the body you want, and enjoying meals is at hand.

Children notice every thing. They are open to what they’re seeing hearing tasting and smelling. Adults tend to sleep walk through their sensory experiences – except for extreme pain or extreme pleasure. Your senses are all about different kinds of personal pleasures. Discover the energy and pleasures of your senses by being more childlike. It’s a very cool way to release stress.

As you learn to use and depend on your intuitive tools, and you will be able to recognize and handle hunger, frustration, stress, temptation, and satisfaction, around eating, so that you look and feel good. Connect with your senses and enjoy it. It's time to stop suffering and to start enjoying eating. Doing this, you will connect with your self intuitively, eat what makes sense and feel liberated.

Welcome to 21st century eating.

Namaste.
