Smart Carbs

It has been found that people who stay slim eat the most carbs.

If you're wondering how can this be, read on. There are certain carbs called, "Resistant Starches" (list below).  Hundreds of studies show that when we have these as part of one meal a day, we eat less and burn more calories.
  • The special thing about these carbs is, they fill us up. We don't need a lot to be satisfied. Many inhibit our appetite. This means they are more filling than protein or fat.
    • The reason why is: we digest them more slowly than other types of foods. This triggers the comforting sensation of fullness.
    • When including carbs as part of a meal, it is important to reduce portions of protein and vegetable so that the plate is balanced. Moderation always works best.
  • Balanced eating -- without cutting out an entire food group -- provides more long-term energy. Additionally, cravings are less, which keeps us upbeat.
    • Starch resistant carbs flip on all of our fullness triggers. This releases hormones in our body that increase eating satisfaction.
    • Balance is natural momentum that feels like inner stability. Momentum is energy and inner stability is a stress buster. It makes sense to eat balanced.
Best of all, eating balanced meals and gently losing weight is inspiring. The result is you may discover other more attractive, easy forms of keeping weight off -- like taking a walk after dinner or eating smaller portions. Balance is nature's way of doing magic. It's intuitive.

The Lucky Ones

We're the lucky ones. While in every country there are people who do not have enough to eat, we have such abundance that we choose what we want, and focus on what not to eat! If you're worried about having self-control so you look good in your bathing suit this summer, think about others before you overeat.

With every blessing comes responsibility. Our food abundance gives us the responsibility of choosing what to eat wisely. It also gives us the responsibility to help feed those who are hungry. One way to turn obsessing about food and eating into positive and productive choices, is to think about food needs of others.

It's as simple as pushing a button - or as involved as you want to be. We can volunteer in a soup kitchen or share on Facebook. Helping others feeds our own social and emotional hungers. Being aware of everyday hunger around the world beyond our own, leads us to recognize and celebrate how lucky we are.

Amazingly, there is always enough time to draw into our lives exactly what is right. When we value curiosity and dignity, there is always enough time to help others. Doing good for others widens perspective so that we know ourselves better. Perspective brings feelings of balance and self-control. When we help others who are hungry, we reinforce and compliment the good within ourselves.

Where people are starving there cannot peace. Here are some ways to help by pushing a button:

Let go and lose weight.

"It's all right letting yourself go as long as you can let yourself back." -- Mick Jagger

The food-filled holidays are over. Still, at a party last night women and men confided in me that they had "let themselves go" between Thanksgiving and the new year. They felt burdened. It makes no sense to focus on what you ate last year.

The old emotionally manipulative 20th century diet mentality  is to humiliate yourself with regrets and beat yourself up with recriminations. It's wrong. It boomerangs and makes you hold on to guilt, anger and fat!

Instead, give yourself space to come back to your best interests. Intuitive eating is tuning-in to the present. Use your 5 senses to recognize messages from your body and your 6th sense (intuition) and eat in response to physical hunger, your values, priorities and personal boundaries.

Feeling badly about what you ate a month ago adds extra weight on your body. It makes you literally feel heavy! Put it down. Let go of it.

Time is passing, be guided by your moments.  Stay in the now and lighten up literally and psychologically! Feel good because you're committed to being true to your body and yourself.  Enjoy your next meal because it's the beginning of living your dream.

Let yourself lose weight by letting go of regrets and guilt trips. Then, keep in step with today, eat less, chew more and use common sense. The pounds will come off.

This is January. Eat to protect your health from seasonal colds and flu and have energy for the best quality of life. You'll get some satisfaction.

Emotional Button Control

I have been writing a booklet about writer's block for a lecture I'm giving in October.* Writer's block is a form of self-sabotage, just like over-eating. People who write fall into emotional traps that push buttons, so that they lose their perspective about what they want to write. It's the same thing that happens when an emotional button sends you "hungry" for comfort food or into a tailspin of over-eating. Life happens.

If you focus on losing control, or beat your self up, you are continuing a cycle of emotional abuse. Focusing on what went wrong creates an emotional trap where perspective is lost. That's when you feel out of control. ouch!

The important thing is forgive your self.

That is when you are able to help your self. There is a saying, Give me the strength to accept things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Talk to your self. Feed your self language of emotional support, not language of emotional abuse. Listen to how you talk to your self.

Reality is often not pleasing or easy to understand, but it is a sounding board for choices. The next time an emotional button is pushed, you can choose to notice that the emotion has nothing to do with hunger for food. One thing is independent of the other.

There really is a possibility at all times, for you to see the bigger picture.

Eat your next meal like it's the first time you ever ate. Really taste your food and savor the experience. Notice how hungry you are and respect the body you're feeding. Accept and allow the choices you make. Listen for your intuitive voice and trust it to protect you and provide you the opportunity to eat wisely to be happy with your body.

Your 6th sense balances your emotions with your ideas so that you can make clear choices when you sit down to eat. When you trust your intuition, you use it. Intuition is your innate wisdom. You will discover that when you trust your intuition, you are in control. You will feel good about your choices.
